What to expect on your first

Chiropractic Visit

Your first visit to Total Health and Wellness includes a thorough exam to assess your current condition and determine which treatments are best suited to your unique needs.

On Arrival

You will fill out any needed paperwork and general forms about your health history, your family history, and current symptoms. Or download files from our PATIENT RESOURCES

A thorough chiropractic exam which may involve x-rays, palpation of various areas, reflex analysis, posture analysis, range of motion testing, a medical history, and a series of questions to diagnose your condition and determine your needs. Other types of diagnostic testing may also be included in this exam.

Adjustments

After your exam, a treatment plan will be created, focusing on the exam discoveries, symptoms, and pain areas. Adjustments will then be made to help alleviate your pain.

Typically, you will not undergo all the adjustments required in one office visit. To get the best results, you will need to return to the office over a period of time.

Aftercare

Aftercare is critical to the success of your treatment plan. You will receive instructions on at home exercise techniques, stretches or various other therapies to facilitate healing while at home that will enhance the treatment and improve healing.

You will also be instructed on the full treatment plan and when to return should any of your symptoms worsen.

Acupuncture Visit

What to expect on your first

First of all, relax! It’s not as scary as you may think. Many people are nervous when they arrive for their first acupuncture treatment. The acupuncture needles are virtually painless and we are quite good at putting you at ease and making sure you are comfortable and feel safe. We will explain to you what we will be doing, how it feels and we may even needle ourselves to show you exactly what to expect. Any and all questions are answered before we move forward.

  • Consultation: Your acupuncturist will begin by asking you about your medical history, including any specific health concerns or conditions you have. They may also inquire about your lifestyle, diet, and emotional well-being to get a comprehensive understanding of your overall health.

  • Examination: Your acupuncturist may conduct a physical examination, which can involve checking your pulse, observing your tongue's appearance, and feeling certain areas of your body to identify points that may need attention.

  • Treatment Plan: Based on your consultation and examination, your acupuncturist will develop a personalized treatment plan. They will explain their findings and the goals of the treatment, which may include addressing specific symptoms or promoting overall wellness.

  • Needle Insertion: Once the treatment plan is established, your acupuncturist will proceed with the insertion of very fine, sterile needles into specific acupuncture points on your body. The number of needles used and their placement will vary depending on your individual needs. The needles are typically inserted shallowly and should not cause significant discomfort.

  • Sensations: You may experience various sensations during the treatment, such as a slight tingling, warmth, or mild pressure. Some people also report a sensation known as "Qi" or energy flow. These sensations are typically not painful and are considered a normal part of the acupuncture experience.

  • Relaxation: After the needles are in place, you will be encouraged to relax and lie still for about 20-30 minutes while the needles work their magic. Many people find this part of the treatment quite calming and even fall asleep.

  • Needle Removal: Once the designated treatment time is over, your acupuncturist will carefully remove the needles. This process is generally painless.

  • Aftercare and Recommendations: Your acupuncturist may provide you with post-treatment instructions, such as dietary recommendations, lifestyle advice, or specific exercises to support the healing process.

  • Follow-Up: Depending on your condition and treatment plan, your acupuncturist may recommend a series of follow-up sessions. These sessions are usually scheduled at regular intervals to achieve the desired therapeutic effects.

It's important to note that acupuncture is generally safe when performed by a qualified and licensed practitioner. However, individual experiences can vary, and some people may feel more relaxed and energized after their first session, while others may take a few sessions to notice significant improvements in their health concerns. Always communicate openly with your acupuncturist about your experiences and any concerns you may have during or after the treatment.
